Bocas del Atrato is a huge complex of mangroves, rivers, creeks and bays on the shores of the Gulf of Urabá, near Turbo. Aquatic birds like herons, frigatebirds and pelicans are especially abundant and they often form large roosts containing hundreds of birds. For birdwatchers, the real specialty is the Sooty-capped Puffbird, a species endemic to Colombia, that can be seen in the mangroves alongside the boardwalk or along the creeks near to the village. The mudflats in “La punta del Atrato” and those at the mouth of Caño Cobao are excellent for observing a variety of migratory shorebirds and with luck the stunning Roseate Spoonbill. Towards the end of October and during November, thousands of migratory Turkey Vultures roost in the mangroves and the sight of thousands of birds leaving in the morning and streaming across the Gulf of Urabá is not to be missed. Boat trips through the mangroves often give rise to sightings of Red Howler Monkeys and Three-toed Sloths, as well as the ubiquitous giant Iguanas.
